• 3D Televisions are not a high priority purchase for UK consumers.
• YouGov survey shows an overall lack of interest in the technology

Remember when the first colour television started to be sold in stores? Well, even if you don’t, it’s easy to imagine how amazing that new technology must have been. Many people have been touting 3D television as the greatest to the way we watch television since the invention of the colour TV set, but despite the best efforts from technology and entertainment companies to push 3D, it seems UK consumers are yet to be impressed.
In a survey released by YouGov for Deloitte, only a tiny 89 of 4,199 respondents suggested that they would purchase a 3D TV in the next year. That number may even be smaller when considering that ‘intention’ is not the same as an actual purchase.
Despite this, big companies like Samsung, Panasonic, Sony and LG have been making a big push bringing a range of 3D television into the UK market. However, with Sky launching a new 3D dedicated channel next month, demand could begin to rise.
However, 3D televisions are still expensive and during a recession are considered a very luxury item for many people. For many, the need to wear glasses to view them makes them look like an imperfect technology. With so many early adopters having been so recently burned by HD-DVD, this isn’t too surprising!
