•	3D Televisions are not a high priority purchase for UK consumers.
•	YouGov survey shows an overall lack of interest in the technology

1st September, 2010

Remember when the first colour television started to be sold in stores? Well, even if you don’t, it’s easy to imagine how amazing that new technology must have been. Many people have been touting 3D television as the greatest to the way we watch television since the invention of the colour TV set, but despite the best efforts from technology and entertainment companies to push 3D, it seems UK consumers are yet to be impressed.

In a survey released by YouGov for Deloitte, only a tiny 89 of 4,199 respondents suggested that they would purchase a 3D TV in the next year. That number may even be smaller when considering that ‘intention’ is not the same as an actual purchase.

Despite this, big companies like Samsung, Panasonic, Sony and LG have been making a big push bringing a range of 3D television into the UK market. However, with Sky launching a new 3D dedicated channel next month, demand could begin to rise.

However, 3D televisions are still expensive and during a recession are considered a very luxury item for many people. For many, the need to wear glasses to view them makes them look like an imperfect technology. With so many early adopters having been so recently burned by HD-DVD, this isn’t too surprising!

About DigitalChoices.co.uk:

Launched in 2005 the DigitalChoices.co.uk website has provided a wide range of features for people who wish to learn more about the often complicated world of digital television.

While the main function of the site is to compare different technology and service providers the features of the site extend well beyond that, giving deal hunters unparalleled access to community features, guides and FAQs, as well as providing regular new updates about the industry and one time deals. You can also compare the various types of digital TV boxes, like the Sky plus box, or the Virgin hd box.

Michael Phillips, from consumer based telecom website digitalchoices.co.uk comments;

“The coming season’s pay-TV decision for football fans has just got a lot harder. With first year cost savings of over £100, BT has priced its Sky Sports 1 and 2 with ESPN offering to warrant serious consideration from anyone looking to bundle their TV with broadband and phone. If recent reports are true about Sky looking to increase its own channel pricing then BT’s new offering could look even more compelling.

“We welcome the fact that BT has priced its broadband, phone and TV sports bundle so aggressively – Sky, Virgin Media and BT now all have genuine solutions for sports fans. However, each provider has different availability criteria so it’s crucial that consumers compare services and prices in their area.

“BT’s new Sky Sports offering is a clear winner on headline pricing as part of a broadband and home phone bundle but it is worth remembering that for those interested in programming beyond sport, it doesn’t carry Sky1 which has a history of premiering key entertainment shows in the UK.

“BT’s announcement is great news for people that don’t live in a Virgin Media cabled street since there is now a competitive alternative to Sky’s own offering. Although BT’s Vision+ box is HD ready, there is currently only one real solution for those wanting their sport fix in HD – and that is Sky.”

Retailers across the UK are now selling the latest improvement in the Set Top box. That is Freeview with HD (High Definition) TV. High Def TV is definitely (pun intended) an improvement when it comes to viewing sports events. At the present time four channels are available in non subscription Freeview HD TV. These are BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and 5. Using Freeview is a great way to decide whether or not HD Digital TV suits you. For some people the difference in clarity means nothing, for others it is essential to their viewing experience. Once you decide if HD TV is to your liking you can opt for more HD channels from popular cable TV providers such as Virgin Media. Virgin Media offers 8 HD channels at no additional cost to its XL customers. SKY satellite TV offers a full 38 high-definition TV channels. Many other TV packages are available with HD TV.
Remember high definition TV will only work on a set that was built with the proper resolution. This means a resolution of at least 720P and preferably 1080P. It is hoped that the number of terrestrial broadcasts of high definition digital TV will expand but with the popularity of quality subscription services like SKY and the expansion of no subscription Freesat, it is more likely all of our broadcasts will be arriving via satellite.
