The Bristol based online retail outlet, Fancy Dress Costumes UK, has today issued a response to the Rt Rev David Gillett, the Bishop of Bolton, Lancashire.
Earlier this month the Bishop issued a plea for retailers to stock less of the ’scary’ Halloween costumes and go for a more general fancy dress costumes range for everyone this year. The ongoing and increasingly widespread debate over the fate of trick or treating behaviour, along with certain high profile figures in the UK asking for the public to vote with their purses on the issue of scary Halloween costumes, leads me to the belief that we are seeing a backlash against the US commercial hijack of this once pagan festival.
The use of TV and film advertising over the years has led us all to a belief that Halloween is a scary night, not for the faint of heart. The roots of this night of Hollywood terror are in an ancient festival called samhain, literally summers end. The loss of this knowledge and the years of blatant commercial horror have allowed the connections of the past to be lost.
The owner and manager of Fancy Dress Costumes UK Mr. M Watson is quoted saying “I don’t often have cause to be in agreement with the church but on this particular issue I have some agreement” he said today. He went on to say “That we all might take a step back from the accepted norm and rethink our part in this celebration, which is really what the night is about, is a good thing. The costume aspect of the night is extremely important to all who take part these days and I don’t think anyone is suggesting that that part should change. The emphasis needs to shift from horror to ladies fancy dress and men’s fancy dress with children being encouraged to dress in costumes that make them happy.”
The range of fancy dress costumes available this year has surpassed last year. There are so many options that we all can be forgiven for staying with the old habits when the choice seems to be overwhelming. But this researcher is suggesting that we investigate everything from Alice in Wonderland Fancy Dress to Army Fancy Dress and beyond. Many a party this year will have the same traditional outfits so why not try something new and find that unique costume that no one else will be wearing.
