Economic Situation Means More people are Choosing to keep Their old Cars on the Road

The announcement, towards the end of August this year, from Lookers Honda that their spare parts division has helped to lift the groups profits up by a staggering 29% compared to last year’s figure of £17.6million has reminded the motor industry in general that in times of economic downturn motorists will opt to buy second hand and new parts for their vehicles to keep them on the road rather than buy new cars.
The news for the new car industry is not all bad though as Lookers also announced in August that despite the scrappage scheme ending earlier this year that new car sales are also up, even allowing for the bias caused by the government scheme.
Many of the better vehicle dismantling yards have also reported that they have not seen a drop in sales of second hand car parts. This is in line with the general expectation that people are spending money on second hand car and van parts from their local van breakers yard when needed. It seems that individuals are not saying ‘sell my van‘ but instead are finding the correct parts and having them fitted to extend the working life of their trusty van for another year.
United Vans off Bristol were quoted as saying ‘This just goes to show that when the chips are down many people are still prepared to roll up their sleeves and get their hands dirty to fit second hand parts to their vehicles. It is still a very large cost saving compared to buying a new car’.
The speed at which we, as a nation, have changed our vehicles in the past has always been related to the strength of the economy. Now it would seem that prudence is in effect and, for the time being, we will hang on to our vans and cars a little longer.
