Icy weather makes finding the best breakdown cover crucial
- Don’t get left on the hard shoulder if your car breaks down in the snow
- Save yourself long term costs by investing in breakdown cover before a problem occurs
This winter has been one of the coldest for nearly 20 years, and the amount snowfall has even broken records in some areas. While all the snow might make things look very seasonal and provide some fun for the kids, it makes getting around much more difficult. Crucially, it doubles the amount of accidents and problems on the roads, and those without decent breakdown cover are the ones mostly likely to be stuck waiting on the longest amount of time for roadside assistance and, of course, paying the most money for the privilege.
Finding the best breakdown cover can be a crucial part of driving a car normally, but in the winter it’s even more vital to make sure you don’t get stuck. There’s nothing worse than missing a family get together simply because you’ve broken down on the way and have no way to continue your travel.
Even the basic packages of most breakdown insurance providers will cover onward travel, so you’re guaranteed to get to your destination and not miss out on anything. They will also try to fix your vehicle at the roadside if it’s at all possible, even in the snow! If not though, you can get your car or motorbike taken to the nearest garage.
There are different levels of cover available for different people. The basic cover should provide enough for most drivers, but if you drive for work all the time or you drive across Europe on a regular basis, looking at more luxury packages is a good idea.
As with any insurance it’s all about weighing up what you want to get covered and the chances you’ll use what you pay for enough to make it all worth the cost. Other facts to consider include how often you drive overall, your level of technical ability when it comes to basic car maintenance and, of course, how old and unreliable your current vehicle happens to be.
If you’re looking for a festive way to help out a friend with a particularly unreliable vehicle, some companies are offering ‘gift cards’ for the Christmas season which are redeemable for one free roadside recovery – a pretty unique gift! If you’re looking for yourself, make sure you check out the deals you can find when you compare breakdown cover to ensure you are paying a fair price.

Sky Continues to convert customer from Sky plus box services to HD, thanks to 3D
- Sky TV has more 3D channels than any other service in the UK
- Sky suggest that 3D TV is set to become much more popular in the next 2 years
5 years ago it was hard enough to find a cinema that was broadcasting films in TV, but today 3D televisions are already becoming a vital technology that people are look out for when buying a new television. Watching films in 3D can give consumers a much greater feeling of depth and immersion in the story than standard 2D films, and the technology is not only getting better year on year but it’s getting much cheaper as well. In fact, TV operator sky predict that within 2 years 3D will be cheap enough that almost all new HD television purchases will be made with 3D in mind.
Right now, 3D television effects are produced using glasses that the user has to wear to bring together two separate pictures. Sky customers also have to pay for a Sky HD box to access 3D services. However, in the near future even glasses won’t be necessary to watch 3D movies, which is when the technology is likely to begin taking off in a massive scale. Videogames should also help spur further investment into 3D in the long term, but Sky have also suggested that while the technology is great for certain television, it’s not something we’ll see on every single show all the time, and is more suited for one off movie experiences rather than everyday viewing.
Sky TV Product Director Brian Lenz said:
“We are very happy with the way things are going when it comes to 3D, but 3D is for when you really want to watch a movie, when you really want to watch TV. I don’t think it will become wallpaper, I don’t think that you’ll have 54 3D channels in 5 years.”
Despite the confidence in the 3D experience, Sky still needs to do a lot more in pushing the technology if it wants to see its millions of current Sky plus box owner’s switch over the newer 3D technology, which costs around £10 a month more than the usual service. There are also 3D films available through rival services like Virgin Media, so Sky has to constantly keep ahead of the game to keep customers interested in their own offering. Consumers with a 3D capable television should compare tv packages online in order to find which service offers the best 3D experience for them.

Gas and electricity prices continue to rise sharply
- NPower joins three other national energy suppliers in rising their prices
When Scottish and Southern, British Gas and Scottish Power all raised their energy prices over the last few months, it was inevitable that other big suppliers would follow. This week, Npower have joined the others, announcing a large price rise of 5%, which would see the average customers bill rise by as much as £54 a year – a significant amount of money for many people.
Roughly 6.2 million people will be effected by this news – every customer on Npowers standard dual or single fuel tariffs.
The prices rises are now in effect for all new customers that sign up to an Npower tariff, but existing customers won’t see their prices change until the 4th January. Those customers currently using the Npower social tariff designed for vulnerable customers will not be affected by these prices rises and will remain fixed at current rates until April. In April however it’s likely that even this tariff will see an increase in prices.
EDF and EON remain the last of the big UK providers to not announce any rise in prices. EON has promised to hold their prices at least until the very start of the new year, while EDF has gone a little further, promising fixed prices until 1st March, 2011.
With all of the big providers now announcing where they stand on energy prices for now, this is a great time for consumers to compare gas and electricity from the big suppliers. With prices changing across the board it’s very likely right now that comparison and switching to a new provider could save you money.
Opting for an online deal rather than using paper billing, and paying your bills through direct debit can also help you save money on your gas and electricity prices.

Despite the end of the Government scrappage scheme, you can still get money for any van that you are taking off the road
In 2009, the government’s plan to introduce a scrappage scheme which allowed owners of cars which were more than ten years old to scrap their cars and enjoy a £2000 discount on any new car, caused quite a stir. Many people thought that it was something that could really kick start the new car and van market, but despite the venture being a success, the government took the decision to withdraw the scheme in March of this year. This obviously came as a big disappointment to many road users, although the existence of companies able to pay good money for old cars and vans means that little is lost.
Naturally the news of the end of the government scrappage scheme was a big letdown for many people, not least producers of new vehicles, who have seen a drop in sales for the year as a whole. For old van owners though, the news is not so grim. There remains an avenue whereby you can scrap your van and receive a decent amount of money for the vehicle. A quick search online will show a good collection of companies who operate as vehicle recyclers who will buy any van. The benefit to the company of course is the worth of scrap metal which at the moment is quite valuable. this means effectively though, that van owners can still trade in their old vehicle, receive a large amount of cash, and put this towards a new vehicle – a process that quite neatly replicates the scrappage scheme that the government so effectively implemented in 2009.
If you contact any of these sites you will always find that there are vans wanted all the time. The demand is strong, and it is worth taking advantage of now. With the new VAT level coming into force in 2011, now is the best possible time to sell your old van for scrap and put the proceeds towards a new vehicle. Just remember that there are plenty of companies out there who are looking for vehicles of age, and despite the government’s lamentable decision to pull this great scrappage deal from under our feet, there are ways around it so that you can still put money towards a great new vehicle.
