Michael Phillips, product director at Broadbandchoices.co.uk commented:

“Whilst often neglected, upload speed is crucial to the online experience if you want to upload high quantities of content like videos and photos, or if you use remote file back-up services or game online.

“Virgin Media’s free boost to upload speeds is excellent news for its customers, especially as they will not be obliged to sign up to a new and lengthy contract.

“Do remember that uploads count towards your monthly broadband usage so if you’re not on an unlimited package – or if your provider has fair usage and traffic management policies – then you must be careful not to fall foul of these.”

Report on Game Angling Instructors Assessments at Kilsheelin, Ireland on Saturday 18th September 2010.

Saturday 18th September saw GAIA go from strength to strength with a series of assessments taking place in Ireland on the beautiful River Suir. The river Suir flows through the centre of County Tipperary winding its way from Borrisnoe mountain, north of Templemore, passing close to Templemore, through Loughmore and Thurles, on through Holycross, famous for its Abbey and Ardmayle. Then on, close to Cashel at Camas, through Golden passing beside Athassel Abbey, and on through Knockgraffon and Cahir. Then on through Ardfinnan, Newcastle, Knocklofty and Clonmel, and on through Kilsheelan and Carrick on Suir, through Fiddown to Waterford to meet the rivers Nore and Barrow, then to sea. We were lucky to be hosted by Philip Maher on the exclusive Kilsheelin beat where we had all the room required to carry out the assessments both on grass and in the water.

In Ireland the trout season opens on the 1st February and the salmon season opens on the 1st January in some areas. On the river Suir the season opens on the 17th March and closes on the 30th of September. The best time for trout is from mid April to the end of June and for salmon is late August to the end of the season.

On the assessment day the four assessors were Mark Roberts, Philip Maher, Leslie Holmes and Mark Patterson, ably assisted by Alberto Laidlaw and William Holmes who are in the process of becoming assessors. They were going to be very busy with 9 assessments taking place in both double handed and single handed casting and at both GAIC and APGAI level. The candidates were from various locations in Ireland including Northern Ireland and some had made the trip from Wales to be assessed. Two casting courses were laid out and the assessors briefed for a busy day. The weather was reasonably kind providing us with a dry day but also giving us an awkward gusty wind. All the candidates turned up in good time and you could feel the tension in the air. They were all briefed as to the logistics of the day and exactly what would be expected and after a comprehensive safety brief the assessments got under way. It was made clear to all the candidates that the assessors were there to help and pass them and allowances would be made for the conditions and their nerves but at the end of the day the standard was the standard. Those candidates being assessed first got under way with their assessments and those left went to the casting lake to practice and were given some assistance from Keith McDonnell, GAIA instructor, if required. All the assessments were carried out in a very professional manner and the assessors tried to keep the candidates at their ease. In an ideal world it would have been great to pass all the candidates and if passion and commitment was the measure everyone would have passed. Infact I can say that no one failed – there were unfortunately some candidates who did not quite reach the extremely high standard required. The pass rate worked out at 55%. All candidates received both verbal and written feedback from the assessors and this included an action plan. Workshops were also carried out with the candidates and everyone complimented the assessors as to how everything had been conducted.

Finally there a few people that need thanks. Firstly I must thank all the candidates for attending the assessments and putting in all the hard work and hope this is only the start of their road as an instructor. Secondly I must thank Philip Maher for providing a superb venue and a special thanks to his wife Ann for looking after us so well. Finally I must thank all the assessors and prospective assessors for their hard work and professionalism in carrying out the assessments.

Economic Situation Means More people are Choosing to keep Their old Cars on the Road

The announcement, towards the end of August this year, from Lookers Honda that their spare parts division has helped to lift the groups profits up by a staggering 29% compared to last year’s figure of £17.6million has reminded the motor industry in general that in times of economic downturn motorists will opt to buy second hand and new parts for their vehicles to keep them on the road rather than buy new cars.

The news for the new car industry is not all bad though as Lookers also announced in August that despite the scrappage scheme ending earlier this year that new car sales are also up, even allowing for the bias caused by the government scheme.

Many of the better vehicle dismantling yards have also reported that they have not seen a drop in sales of second hand car parts. This is in line with the general expectation that people are spending money on second hand car and van parts from their local van breakers yard when needed. It seems that individuals are not saying ‘sell my van‘ but instead are finding the correct parts and having them fitted to extend the working life of their trusty van for another year.

United Vans off Bristol were quoted as saying ‘This just goes to show that when the chips are down many people are still prepared to roll up their sleeves and get their hands dirty to fit second hand parts to their vehicles. It is still a very large cost saving compared to buying a new car’.

The speed at which we, as a nation, have changed our vehicles in the past has always been related to the strength of the economy. Now it would seem that prudence is in effect and, for the time being, we will hang on to our vans and cars a little longer.

About United Vans:

United Vans of Bristol are a vehicle recycling and dismantling company that have a licensed facility on the outskirts of Bristol. They remove and store parts for the second hand market. Currently they are looking for old and damaged cars such as the Brava Pickup. When it is time to scrap your vehicle contacting them, via their website, will enable you to get a fair and current assessment of the market value of your vehicle.

UK Consumers: “Unmoved by 3D Digital Television”

• 3D Televisions are not a high priority purchase for UK consumers.
• YouGov survey shows an overall lack of interest in the technology

1st September, 2010

Remember when the first colour television started to be sold in stores? Well, even if you don’t, it’s easy to imagine how amazing that new technology must have been. Many people have been touting 3D television as the greatest to the way we watch television since the invention of the colour TV set, but despite the best efforts from technology and entertainment companies to push 3D, it seems UK consumers are yet to be impressed.

In a survey released by YouGov for Deloitte, only a tiny 89 of 4,199 respondents suggested that they would purchase a 3D TV in the next year. That number may even be smaller when considering that ‘intention’ is not the same as an actual purchase.

Despite this, big companies like Samsung, Panasonic, Sony and LG have been making a big push bringing a range of 3D television into the UK market. However, with Sky launching a new 3D dedicated channel next month, demand could begin to rise.

However, 3D televisions are still expensive and during a recession are considered a very luxury item for many people. For many, the need to wear glasses to view them makes them look like an imperfect technology. With so many early adopters having been so recently burned by HD-DVD, this isn’t too surprising!

About DigitalChoices.co.uk:

Launched in 2005 the DigitalChoices.co.uk website has provided a wide range of features for people who wish to learn more about the often complicated world of digital television.

While the main function of the site is to compare different technology and service providers the features of the site extend well beyond that, giving deal hunters unparalleled access to community features, guides and FAQs, as well as providing regular new updates about the industry and one time deals. You can also compare the various types of digital TV boxes, like the Sky plus box, or the Virgin hd box.
