Using Software Outsourcing and Lean Management Principles; Energy Efficiency can be at the top of the Agenda

Bristol May 2010

The current economic climate is putting a massive strain and pressure on the priorities of businesses large and small. In these conditions it is no wonder that the priorities of most have been streamlined and reduced to core functions. What was once a nice idea is no longer allowed if there is no immediate profit benefit to the company concerned. This reduction in areas of commitment for most businesses has led some of the most significant movements of the last few years on the side-lines, notably energy efficiency and carbon usage reduction initiatives. Although understandable it can be very easily shown that this is a short-sighted approach.

The direct correlation between resources used and cost to the business is explicit. Having said this, without a plan to move forward with reducing energy use and carbon footprint the whole idea can seem better left alone until brighter times return. This is totally understandable and usually comes from a failure to quantify outcomes and cost savings. Any manager on restricted budgets will want to have two vital pieces of information before committing budget resources to a project. These are “How much?” and “How long?” The lack of expertise in these fields means that many companies will, by necessity, leave this to one side in favour of more quantifiable projects and budgetary commitments.

The use of a Lean management expert in these situations can force a break in the cycle of the unknown and allow a glimpse of the outcomes to be expected. Once a plan has clearly defined outcomes then the rest of the process can be followed as in any project. The key here is the wisdom to engage outside help at the correct time and of the correct type. Lean consulting companies like Bristol’s Suaju Ltd, have a wealth of experience of defining outcomes and laying out a plan at project inception. Using expertise like this can put energy efficiency and carbon footprint reduction back on the agenda by defining, in real terms, the amounts that can be saved by taking a course of action. For instance, they may define your core functions in energy usage and cost to the business. If this core business function were to be, say, software production, the consultant may suggest that software outsourcing be a more cost effective route, either from an energetic or a company resources point of view. Even if this course of action can be shown to save only one pound more than the total cost of the project then the company concerned can confidently put energy saving and carbon usage reduction back on the agenda and stand proud, out in the world where all too many are ignoring this critical path to save the reduction in lifestyle of future generations.

Many will still say that with the economy being the way it is they cannot take on board new initiatives, but those that have the insight and determination to go the extra mile can gain cost savings and kudos in the wider community. In these days of social marketing and peer recommendation, any company that can gain the extra respect of the public at large whilst continuing with its core functions will reap the financial rewards, in the long term certainly but in the short term also.

It is important to adopt the right strategies as far as promoting your business online is concerned. What you can do to promote your business online is to publish ads or get your business listed in the web directories where the entries are browsed by people interested in them. You can use a double edged sword, that of promoting your own website through the directing listings or web ads. You can also send in emails or flyers to your targeted base of customers as means of pest control advertising. Post ads for your business on the website of related businesses, so that it is visible to prospective clients.

But when you write on a relevant topic or provide solutions to a problem that people would like to read your site is worth getting natural inbound links. It can be two-way link building as exchanging links with fellow bloggers or getting included in a network of blogs and submitting links to prominent web directories.

Keywords selected after in-depth research promise good amount of organic traffic to your site. An SEO professional knows how to make the best use of the keywords-research tools available on the web. Determining the most effective keywords set for your site is the most important part as traffic and conversion highly depends on it.

An accurate sitemap helps search engine index your blog properly as it contains all the links of the pages on your site in a most structured manner.

Exposure to SEO will also save you from designing a complex site with too much of Java Script or Flash elements. The simpler the design is the more it ensures cross browser compatibility and it becomes easier for the search engines robots to crawl your site faster.

Avoid phony breakdown cover comparison websites

Recently a website which purported to contain information about great deals for breakdown cover published an article featuring the 15 greatest British Cars ever built. While the article did garner significant attention for the website, and did create intense debate over the list of cars chosen, it did nothing to assist United Kingdom drivers in choosing the best deal for their particular breakdown cover needs. This type of bait and switch promotion is counter to all the legitimate breakdown cover comparison available online. In fact it is counter to all the noncommercial aspects of the Internet value as well. When planning a holiday trip or prepping for a cold winter one doesn’t compare breakdown cover without substantial information.

A look at classic Brit cars is surely entertaining but is of no value when one needs to study European breakdown cover single trip prices. Many online product and service comparison sites have the blessing of Ofcom. Perhaps that agency needs to name a few cover comparison sites as approved. One of the greatest problems on the Internet is the tendency of site owners and creators to manipulate the search engine system so as to sell the public misinformation. When you need help understanding services from companies offering breakdown cover or telecoms services look for help from web sites that are part of proven to be honest organizations such as the Consumer Choices Network. This way when you are trying to find the best deal for motorbike cover you’ll not find yourself reading about Morgan plus Eights or Steve McQueen in a Mustang.

UK Phone line users place themselves on hold

A recent survey by popular home phone information website Homephonechoices.co.uk pointed out that many United Kingdom residents are for the most part completely unwilling to switch home phone suppliers. This holds true even when the same users have the chance to save a great deal of money every year. It is almost as if there is a tradition among UK homes to stick with the tried and true. Certainly many UK households do not consider the possibility of switching phone companies because they suspect there will be high charges involved for the installation of a new phone line. What most are unaware of is that companies like BT and Virgin Media have special offers in place that can negate the cost of a new phone line installation. BT’s charge of 128 pounds is cut to zero if you sign up for any of their Talk, Surf and Watch plans. These plans let users enjoy unlimited phone calls, internet surfing and TV programmes at one set price. Virgin Media was charging customers 49 pounds for a new installation but recently reduced that price to free. The truth is switching phone companies pays off in huge savings every year. Every home phone supplier has special incentives for coming into their fold. These vary from month to month. So while you may leave BT for Virgin one year, you might very well decide to come back to BT the next if they have the best sign up incentive.

Comparing Dongles For Laptops The Easy Way

Mobile broadband comparison charts differ greatly on how much download one might expect to need and use during the course of a month. With most UK mobile broadband companies that offer dongles for laptops charging quite a few pence for every MB used over the allotted amount being able to estimate your usage is essential. We tested several pay as you go dongles and their connected pricing plans. We checked usage over the course of an average month. Our results were as follows. Using a plan that allowed for 5GB of download was far less expensive than a pay as you go plan that allowed unlimited usage. In fact our testing barely used 1 GB of download during the month. However, as soon as we began to download Movies and Videos our allotment on the smaller plans was exceeded. An average two hour movie used 500 MB of download. A little judicious planning did allow for movies and other video downloads within the confines of our pay as you go plan. Considering that most pay as you go mobile broadband users need the service in spurts it is especially reasonable to purchase broadband in this way for traveling.
The relative cost of mobile broadband is far cheaper when purchased under a contract basis. And qualification for specials such as free laptop deals is contingent upon signing up for a longer term. Our conclusion is that pay as you go dongles are a superb short term assistant. At the very least they allow one to choose the company they like best. But once that choice is made one should sign a one year contract and get the cheapest rate for the highest speed and greatest amount of download.

Eon factors into breakdown cover comparison

United Kingdom energy supplier Eon has teamed up with RAC so as to include base level breakdown cover as part of their Home Care and boiler cover protection. Their premise being that these two services are in some way closely related. Much has been written about breakdown cover as a “throw in” with other types of services and deservedly so. You can purchase an addendum of breakdown cover while buying your groceries or as a contract extra for your mobile phone service. But is this a wise decision and doesn’t it simply make it more difficult to compare breakdown cover. The offer from Eon appears generous enough at first but as with all add on breakdown cover options we are left limited in our understanding of our level of roadside assistance. Indeed, RAC offers a 30% discount on coverage prices above and beyond the basic values given with the Eon boiler cover plan. These types of packages and bundling are, to be frank, completely untenable.

A spokesman for Eon states:

“It can be just as frustrating if your boiler breaks down as if you’re left on the roadside waiting for help. So, when you take out our Central Heating Care you’ll also receive complimentary RAC Breakdown Cover making sure you’re completely covered home and away.”

If you are in need of breakdown cover or boiler cover then by all means compare prices and service for them. A valid breakdown cover comparison is essential if one hopes to match their driving habits to their cover needs. If your boiler is a bit dodgy protect yourself with cover for it. But don’t tie these two items together. What will be next then, motorbike breakdown cover attached to a health plan? Actually, that one might make a bit of sense.

Competition within TV packages adds a new dimension

SKY TV is adding a new dimension to its viewing TV packages. More specifically it is adding a third dimension in the form of the United Kingdom’s first dedicated 3D channel. Subscribers to SKY will be able to watch popular 3D movies such as Alice in Wonderland and How to Train Your Dragon. And while those films are perfect for the younger set we all know the true value of 3D TV is for watching football. SKY kicked off (horrible pun) 3D sports viewing with a presentation of Man U versus Chelsea. Conventional Cable TV providers will be hard pressed to top that action.

Still, as inexpensive as TV brought to Earth by SKY may be it does not offer the combined incentives as made available from cable TV providers such as Virgin Media or from IPTV providers as with BT Vision channels. SKY is able to offer fabulous TV programming at great rates by sending its signal to you via satellite. This line of view advantage is extremely cheap to provide and is reflected in their pricing. But when attempting to bundle other telecommunications services such as broadband and home telephone services SKY is at a disadvantage. Subscribers to BT’s Talk, Surf and Watch plans integrate inexpensive phone calls into the mix and have completely scalable TV options. Hard core high speed broadband users benefit from Virgin Media’s fibre optic network that now reaches 51% of the UK. In order to offer these services SKY must contract for landlines from either BT or Virgin. This makes it difficult for SKY to compete in non TV venues.
