Mobile broadband comparison charts differ greatly on how much download one might expect to need and use during the course of a month. We tested several pay as you go dongles and their connected pricing plans. We checked usage over the course of an average month. Our results were as follows. Using a plan that allowed for 5GB of download was far less expensive than a pay as you go plan that allowed unlimited usage. In fact our testing barely used 1 GB of download during the month. However, as soon as we began to download Movies and Videos our allotment on the smaller plans was exceeded. An average two hour movie used 500 MB of download. A little judicious planning did allow for movies and other video downloads within the confines of our pay as you go plan. Considering that most pay as you go mobile broadband users need the service in spurts it is especially reasonable to purchase broadband in this way for traveling.
The relative cost of mobile broadband is far cheaper when purchased under a contract basis. And qualification for specials such as free laptop deals is contingent upon signing up for a longer term. Our conclusion is that pay as you go dongles are a superb short term assistant. At the very least they allow one to choose the company they like best. But once that choice is made one should sign a one year contract and get the cheapest rate for the highest speed and greatest amount of download.
